AbstractA Green Paper, "Support and aspiration: A new approach to special educational needs and disability," was published by the Department for Education in March 2011. The Green Paper, styled as a response to the frustrations of children and young people, their families, and the professionals who work with them, sets out the government's commitment to reforming the current system for identifying, assessing, and supporting children and young people aged up to 25 who are disabled or have special educational needs (SEN). The Green Paper gives welcome attention to the often difficult move from child to adult services for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, citing poor planning of support and the lack of choice and opportunities of appropriate further education provision to prepare young people for life and work, as part of the problem. In this article, the author reviews the reforms and their likely impact on further education, and reflects on progress so far in taking them forward. (ERIC).
