Abstract | The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 20-22 June 2012, marking the twentieth anniversary of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the tenth anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. With more than 500 official and side events at the Riocentro Convention Centre, over 45,000 participants from government, business and civil society, including UN officials, academics, journalists and the general public, in the nine days of the lead up to and during the official conference, Rio+20 was the biggest UN conference ever held. The conference focused on two themes: (1) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (2) the institutional framework for sustainable development. The conference aimed to secure new political commitment for sustainable development; assess the progress and gaps in implementing the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development; and address new and emerging challenges (UNCSD 2012). Throughout the conference, education was frequently mentioned as an important area of sustainable development. (ERIC). |
