Abstract | Middle school students hear about energy continuously: in the news, in many of their classes, and at home. Most students realize that recent wars have been fought over energy resources, and many will accept that overreliance on fossil fuels is changing the global climate. Students understand that as the world population surges past seven billion, energy conservation will play a major role in any sustainable energy policy. Yet they have no idea how much energy is being consumed by a given device or appliance in their own home. Science teachers have a unique opportunity to empower students to explore and analyze their energy consumption with a safe, easy-to-use, and low-cost electrical energy meter. Because energy is a topic discussed in all science courses, this activity could be used by middle school teachers of any science discipline. This investigation addresses "A Framework for K-12 Science Education" (NRC 2012), as it involves the practices of planning and carrying out investigations and analyzing and interpreting data. (Contains 3 figures and an activity worksheet.) (ERIC). |
