AbstractThis research explores how faith-based groups experience vocational discipleship within a shared context of generative craft learning. Qualitative interviews were conducted with thirty-one participants from nine different vocational groups to understand their formative experience of collaborative work. This study attempts to gain a critical understanding of certain collaborative learning theories that emphasize aspects of generativity, in the forming and functioning of craft work groups. Interest in craft learning leads one into the orbit of vocational learning literature (e.g., Communities of Practice, Vocational Education and Training (VET), et. al.). That said, vocational discipleship literature has yet to vigorously explore how the intentional development of generative objects (endemic to shared craft learning) may interact with the spiritual formation of vocationally aligned collaborators. The findings of this study suggest that though traditional craftwork is no longer viable for producing mass consumer goods, the timeless components of craft learning generativity (i.e., Shared Practice of Authentic Work, Educative Failure, Iterative Effort, Skilled Improvisation, Parts to the Whole Integration) present a learning posture that may aid far ranging applications of faithful labor and vocation. The implications of this study may help leaders in spiritual formation consider how people of faith (working in diverse vocations) may take on the approach of a craft learning, and by so doing grow in the generative synthesis of their faith and work.
