How have previous professional experiences been perceived to impact females who have been hired as a school superintendent? 2. How have lived personal experiences been perceived to impact females who have been hired as a school superintendent? 3. What is the perception of the relationship between female superintendents' experiences and their expectations of attaining the position as school superintendent? The study conducted a survey and semi-structured interview of eight current practicing female superintendents in suburban elementary schools in Illinois. The career pathways to the superintendency for the participants was unique to each and included many positions. Lastly, the study found the participants encountered many barriers in their personal and professional lives leading up to the superintendency and during including challenges balancing personal and professional life, self-confidence, and navigating biases. The participants found value in having a mentor during their career and shared ways they were able to build confidence and navigate bias.
