AbstractEducation is a moral enterprise, and higher education has the accountability to produce skilled learners with cognitive, psychological, and social-emotional competences. Formal and informal approaches of character education increase in demand. On the one hand, students should be guided to gain character strength and moral compass to confront the life complexities. On the other hand, the democratic society needs ethical citizens who endeavor to ascertain public good. Diverse character programs can be observed over time and researchers have been dedicated to investigating and exploring philosophical, pedagogical, and empirical measures in the field of character education. The researcher addressed three broad questions upon character education in higher education sector -- its present state, its effectiveness, and the logic of its necessity in the new era. The research adopted the methodology of qualitative meta-synthesis to synthesize the studies conducted on character education in U.S. colleges since 2000. 23 isolated studies were used as the data. They were coded and reconstructed to generate transferrable findings that improve knowledge and understanding of character education in the U.S. in the 21st century. Based on the research findings, this study gives account of the current state of character education in the U.S., the various programs and practice applied in college character education, and the explanation of why character education is significant in colleges. A final synthesis was made to address the mutually interactive relationships of individual learners and educators, institutional management, and national support and policy in the mechanism of college character education. The research gives rise to a dynamic model of college character education, highlighting the critical objective of college character education -- an orientation to individual holistic development. Higher education must address whole-person development. To that end, the individuals, institutions, and the policymakers each assume different roles and collaborate to maximize the extent and effectiveness of character education. The researcher suggests college character education be promoted as an affirmative action, urging for more solid support from government. As the comprehensively developed college students are more inclined to make commitment to the democratic ideals, being an active participant and constructor of the larger society. The research aims to make contributions to the literature. The research findings can be informative for educational practitioners to adjust teaching with students' character development. Institutional organizers and policymakers can benefit from such qualitative meta-synthesis study in capturing the scenario of character education, making judgment to calibrate educational guideline, and providing support when necessary.
