AbstractInstitutions of higher education must better understand and meet the needs of commuter students, so commuters are more likely to persist and graduate. The purpose of this study was to identify the specific factors that influence a commuter student's decision to remain enrolled by answering two questions: (1) What is the lived experience of a full-time, traditional-aged, first-year commuter student who chooses to remain enrolled after their first year at a small, private university? (2) What specific programs, services, and support at the small, private institution influence a commuter student's decision to remain enrolled? The site for this study is a small, private, four-year university located in the upper Midwest that draws on a strong liberal arts heritage and has a primarily traditionally-aged student population. The participants in the research study were fulltime, degree-seeking undergraduate students who graduated from high school in spring or summer 2017, and continuously enrolled on a full-time basis as commuter students at the study site into their fourth semester. This is a qualitative study, designed to allow participants to use their own voices to tell their stories about the factors that influenced their decisions to remain enrolled. The findings suggest that familial influences, including a family's financial status, and institutional tuition cost were instrumental in students' decisions to remain enrolled. Additional factors included relationships with individuals on campus, accessibility of services and resources, and connection with the institution. Though the students in this study had mostly positive experiences, there were barriers to their success that the institution should address to improve their experiences including parking accessibility, allowing commuter students to work on campus, and providing opportunities for commuters to connect with other students and faculty early on in their experience.
