AbstractIn the 2017-2018 school year, 79% of public school teachers in the United States were White and non-Hispanic. About 9% of teachers were Hispanic (of any race), and 7% were Black and non-Hispanic. Two percent of teachers identified as Asian and non-Hispanic, 2% as Two or more races and non-Hispanic, and less than 1% as Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, non-Hispanic and American Indian/Alaska Native, non-Hispanic (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2020). This study examined certified Virginia teachers in high-needs elementary school perspectives on cultural competence and how it impacts classroom management styles. The research questions addressed throughout this study are: RQ1 (Qualitative): How do K-5 public elementary school teachers define cultural competence? Subquestion (Qualitative): To what extent do teachers use cultural competence in classroom management strategies? RQ 2 (Quantitative): What factors influence a teacher's classroom management style?
