Abstract | The purpose of this quantitative correlational-predictive study was to examine Physical Activity and BMI as potential predictors of Academic Performance among community college students at a community college in Southern California. The foundation for this study was provided by physical activity, BMI, social cognitive theory of self-regulation, and related concepts. The study was conducted with a convenience sample of N = 86 community college students recruited from two community colleges in Southern California. One research question asked to what extent Physical Activity (MET-min/week), and BMI combined predicted community college students' Academic Performance (operationalized as self-reported cumulative GPA). The survey data was analyzed using the classic model for multiple regression, with both predictors entered together into the regression equation. The overall model was not significant, F(2, 83) = 1.191, p = 0.309, R2 = 0.028, adjusted R2 = 0.004, indicating that approximately 0.4% of the variance in GPA is accounted by BMI and physical activity. Inspection of the individual standardized beta coefficients found neither BMI ([beta] = -0.17, p = 0.127) nor physical activity (MET) ([beta] = 0.002, p = 0.985) to be significant predictors to the criterion variable academic performance (GPA). Future research should consider experimental research to collect more accurate data, developing more meaningful instruments within this area and for this population, utilizing objective measures of physical fitness, and collecting data for GPA and other measures of academic performance from institutional records.
