AbstractResearch shows that in a traditional college setting, resident assistants (RA) have access to and influence over students in several different ways. RAs are often utilized as academic and campus resources, counselors, problem solvers, and more. RAs have a unique access to students that no other administrator, faculty, or staff member does. Most traditional college students leave home for the first time and live in a residence hall where they have the potential to interact with their RA during times and hours when other administrators, faculty, and staff have gone home. While students utilize their RA for their intended purpose of academic and social integration, RAs are often the first contact for students as it relates to mental health issues, emotional problems, relational issues, and spiritual matters. This research examines both qualitative and quantitative data collected through RA and student surveys to gain insights on what impact the spiritual maturity of RAs has on the spiritual well-being of their students and what type of training the most spiritually mature RAs receive as it relates to student care. The key finding is that the amount of time a student spends with their RA in a given week shapes the way they view their RA and how the student utilizes them as a resource for spiritual support.
