AbstractServant leadership, a phrase coined and established by Robert K. Greenleaf in the 1970's, has been thoroughly researched as a leadership theory in the business and corporate environments. However, in recent decades, research has extended this leadership theory to the educational leadership setting. This study sought to examine the dimensions of servant leadership, as determined by Liden et al. (2008), as predictors of teachers' perceptions of teacher morale in their schools. Middle and high school teachers in a large school district in a southeastern state responded to a 48-item survey that was a combination of two instruments measuring servant leadership qualities of the participants' respective principals and participants' perceptions of teacher morale. The survey consisted of the 28 items of the Servant Leadership Questionnaire developed by Liden et al. (2008) and 20 items of the larger 100-item Purdue Teacher Opinionnaire developed by Bentley and Rempel (1980). The twenty items selected from the PTO focused solely on participants' rapport with their respective principal. The research study first determined the existence of a correlation between the participants' ratings of their principals' employment of the servant leadership dimensions and perceptions of teacher morale in their respective schools. Then, a stepwise multiple regression determined a statistically significant predictive value for four of the seven dimensions of servant leadership, while the remaining three dimensions were determined as predictors that were not as statistically significant.
