AbstractThe American demographic is constantly changing from the prominently white, Anglo-Saxon population to a diverse, multicultural, multilingual dynamic. According to the United States Census Bureau, the non-Hispanic white population is projected to shrink over the coming decades, from 199 million people in 2020 to 179 million people in 2060 -- even as the U.S. population continues to grow. Regardless of such national trends, many teachers are not prepared to teach Latinx students because they have not been provided nor participated in the professional development of culturally responsive classrooms. This improvement science initiative holds that by increasing knowledge and building the capacity of teachers to create culturally responsive classrooms, the literacy performance of Latinx students will improve. This initiative aims to see growth in the literacy achievement of Latinx students as measured by North Carolina English II End of Course assessment scores.
