AbstractThe current study utilized a quantitative non-experimental design to examine the relationships between grit, transformational leadership behavior, and socioeconomic status (SES) in a purposive sample of college students at two southern colleges. Participants completed a questionnaire measuring their total grit, grit subscales, total transformational leadership behavior, and transformational leadership behavior subscales. Participants were divided into two groups, the low SES group, and the high SES group. The current study conducted correlational analysis, simple linear regression analysis, standard multiple regression analysis, and independent t tests. The findings revealed medium-to-large positive relationships between grit and transformational leadership behavior for college students. In addition, grit and grit subscales were significant predictors of transformational leadership behavior and transformational leadership behavior subscales for college students. Related to SES, the low SES group revealed stronger positive correlations and predictors between grit and transformational leadership behavior compared to the high SES group. The standard multiple regression analysis reported that when taken all together, consistency of interest and perseverance of effort were predictors of transformational leadership behavior subscales for the low and high SES groups. The independent t tests only showed a significant difference perseverance of effort in between the low and high SES groups. The current study validated the relationship and predictability between grit and transformational leadership behavior for college students.
