AbstractThe idea of student engagement as a predictor of student success was first introduced by Alexander Astin (1974; 1984) who studied student involvement. The connection of student involvement and student success has led to the focus on student and how we measure it to ensure that institutions are doing all they can to improve outcomes. Nothing has been more successful in claiming to effectively measure student engagement than the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). First developed in 1999, the NSSE (pronounced Nessie) has been utilized by over 1,700 institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada, with approximately 6.5 million students PhD participating in the survey. The widespread acceptance of the survey has led to an overrepresentation of research that supports the relationship between NSSE's engagement indicators and high impact practices to a set of outcomes, which is essentially the input-output dynamic expressed by Astin in his Involvement Theory. However, there is not much research that exists that looks critically at the NSSE instrument itself, to determine whether it contains biases and/or hidden meanings that may impact how students respond. This study is a text analysis that will use the Hermeneutic approach to examine and interpret the construction and language of the NSSE survey to uncover factors that may shape the survey-takers understanding. It will also look at the context in which the NSSE was created, who it was created for, and who may be excluded in how the survey assigns value to and measures engagement.
