Abstract | This qualitative case study aimed to identify teachers' knowledge and perceptions of culturally responsive teaching and how they implement culturally responsive teaching strategies with culturally and linguistically diverse students, specifically students with a Gullah vernacular, in an elementary school setting. The researcher stratified the population to diversify the participant sample based on a specific criterion: (a) certified teachers (2nd-5th), (b) minimum of three years of teaching, (c) highest degree earned, (d) gender, (e) of any race, and (f) self-identified as implementing culturally responsive teaching within their classroom. This study collected information using three qualitative data sources, (a) data analysis, (b) interviews, and (c) lesson plans. The researcher's data analysis identified codes and themes using narrative analysis to construct meaning from their teaching experiences. Findings indicated that teachers do not implement culturally responsive teaching strategies for diverse students. Furthermore, teachers attest to being prepared to be good teachers but not culturally responsive teachers with the expertise needed to revise instructional materials to better represent or include cultural groups. Participants recommended a diversity course as part of preservice programs, ongoing professional development workshops, and more flexibility in curriculum content to implement CRT better.
