AbstractCurrent studies in education and leadership discuss the changing and increasingly complex nature of the principalship in public education as well as how these leaders are key to school success. Therefore, principals must be well prepared and supported to optimally perform. Principals' wellbeing is suffering at increasingly high rates due to the executive level stress and demands of the job. Research in psychology and leadership has pointed to fear and fear-related emotions (stress and anxiety) as inhibitors to both wellbeing and leadership performance. More specifically, occupational fear can be prominent within leaders and further contribute to these feelings. This phenomenological study used structured interviews to learn more about 20 public school principals' experience with occupational fear by asking all participants the same 15 questions regarding their job as a principal, perceived stress level, experiences with occupational fear, awareness of their and colleague's occupational fear, the impact of these fears on their job performance and well-being, and thoughts on support for these fears. The study revealed that principals are experiencing a high level of stress and occupational fears connected to their fears of being criticized, their fear of failure, and fear of organizational maintenance. Additionally, principals' wellbeing, stress level, and job performance are suffering due to their experiences with these fears. Support is desired in helping principals manage these fears and route this energy for positive outcomes. This study also revealed important questions to guide further research in regard to principals' experience with occupational fear, their job performance and wellbeing.
