| Abstract | The recent COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the entire U.S. education system, with many educators experiencing high levels of stress and burnout as they navigate the increased challenges. This study focused on the burnout experienced by heads of microschools, which are small, community-based schools that typically serve fewer than 150 students. Using a mixed-methods approach anchored in Maslach's burnout inventory, I examined the levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment experienced by heads of microschools. The study asked 25 heads of microschools across four states to participate in a survey with 10 responses, and found all experienced symptoms of burnout. All of the participants stated that stress directly impacted their ability to perform, and 60% identified physical symptoms directly linked to burnout, such as feeling tired, slow-moving, and less enthusiastic about continuing their work. The results suggested that heads of microschools face significant challenges, including increased workloads, financial strain, and uncertainty about their schools' sustainability. Findings from this study revealed that microschools lack the supports needed to sustain the mental health and well-being of their heads of school. The data indicated that microschools also lack the resources needed to sustain principals in their current position and, as such, implicated that the microschool model itself may be unsustainable in the long-term because burnout can have negative consequences for job satisfaction, retention, and student outcomes. Recommendations for addressing burnout in heads of microschools include professional practices such as mindfulness, positive psychology, and reduced workload.
