Abstract | Collegiate student-athletes have been shown to use available mental health resources at a significantly lower rate than the general student population despite there being no evidence that student-athletes experience a lower rate of symptoms of mental illness. This study explores the experience of athletes in a pre-existing, preventative, resiliency training called Changing Minds, Changing Lives (CMCL). The goal of CMCL is to strengthen the athlete's utilization of their strengths in order to prevent the development of significant mental illness symptoms. Incorporating such training as part of the overall athletic preparation might reduce post-crisis treatment costs and reduce the prevalence of athlete suicide. Following engagement in the CMCL course, student-athletes reported a statistically significant increase in resilience as well as in autonomy satisfaction and autonomy frustration. Learning skills to manage stress and depression might also help reduce the stigma of addressing mental health issues. Since most college athletes are not going to be professional athletes resiliency training could help them adjust to the challenges of post-college life.
