AbstractThe purpose of this case study was to examine the utility of Digital Video Reflection (DVR) as a mediational tool to self-analysis; an investigation if DVR is an effective means of reflective practice for first-year teacher's adaptive expertise development. Participant was formally enrolled in a graduate-level education literacy specialist program. The program was governed in part by the International Literacy Associations (2017), which explicitly focuses on reflective practice for teachers. The participant, during her graduate program, employed a formal observation instrument to guide her in video reflective activity. Post-graduation, the participant was asked to record and analyze her teaching on her own, employing reflective practices learned in the graduate program. This study used a variety of qualitative methods within the context of a bound single case study to examine the use of Digital Video Reflection as a means for a novice teacher to capture personal teaching episodes and reflect on them as an integral part of her professional development. Results demonstrate how a novice teacher's work with DVR of her teaching promoted adaptive expertise. This inquiry into the teacher's own practice was necessary for the teacher to develop adaptive expertise, ultimately resulting in the promotion of student learning. Adaptive expertise is teacher developed ability to use knowledge for change in unanticipated situations. Results of this DiP (Dissertation in Practice) also implicate how engaging teachers in DVR for the purpose of developing adaptive expertise could influence others in teacher education such as veteran teachers, administrators, and teacher educators. The promotion of DVR in teacher educator programs and school districts may result in it being a vehicle to uptake in the profession, resulting in adaptive expertise for the purpose of teacher effectiveness, career stability, and student learning.
