AbstractIn 1899, in Eatonville, Florida, Russell and Mary Calhoun, two African American teachers from Tuskegee Institute, founded the Robert Hungerford School for African American students. Many White southerners were ferociously against African American education. However, the Calhouns were able to galvanize resources and support from white donors to help support the schools efforts. The endorsement of Booker T. Washington and the implementation of the Hampton-Tuskegee model of education were monumental in the Hungerford School's success. Currently, minimal literature exists surrounding the contributions of Russell and Mary Calhoun and their leadership in establishing the Robert Hungerford School. This purpose of this study is to fill that gap by providing a detailed account of the conditions that led to the creation of the school and the impact it had on its community. The significance of this study is to provide a historical knowledge and to commemorate the leadership efforts of the Calhouns. Current school leaders can also use this case study as an example of how to form meaningful relationships with the stakeholders of the school. This narrative was composed by gathering primary sources from various library and archives around the country and contextualizing these primary sources with books and articles.
