AbstractScience, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are the foundation for discovery and innovation. STEM skills are increasingly important for all Americans to succeed in the workplace and in their everyday lives. To develop these skills, the Nation must engage in a collaborative effort to ensure that all Americans have access to high-quality STEM education throughout their lifetimes. A focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in STEM requires attention to opportunities across education and career pathways. This effort is especially important for those who are underrepresented and underserved in STEM. A well-prepared and diverse STEM workforce is essential to maintaining global leadership as it galvanizes the ingenuity of Americans to accelerate tomorrow's breakthroughs and strengthens America's economic and national security. In December 2018, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Committee on STEM Education (CoSTEM) released "Charting a Course for Success: America's Strategy for STEM Education" (ED590474), a five-year STEM education strategic plan, hereafter referred to as the Strategic Plan. Federal agencies engaged in STEM education are implementing the Strategic Plan, under the guidance of CoSTEM and its Federal Coordination in STEM Education (FC-STEM) Subcommittee. This progress report describes ongoing efforts and implementation practices across the Federal government as it works to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Strategic Plan. This report also compiles budget information from all Federal agencies that have STEM education investments during Fiscal Year (FY) 2021. Additionally, this document fulfills the requirement under Section 101(d) of the "America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010)" that the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) transmit an annual report to Congress providing an update on the performance of the Federal STEM education portfolio and an inventory of Federal STEM education investments. [For the 2021 report, see ED625726.] (ERIC).
