AbstractLow-wage compensation for employees has far-reaching adverse implications in the work environment. This qualitative exploratory case study explored the influence of low wage compensation on employee motivation in a higher learning institution in the state of Mississippi. The problem addressed was the impact of low wages on employee motivation in the institution of higher education. Employees earning small wages are lowly motivated compared to those whose wages are high. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore the impact of low wages on employee motivation in an institution of higher education in the state of Mississippi. Research has indicated that poorly motivated employees perform dismally in their duties; hence, the institutions must provide sufficient wages according to the wage and remuneration policies. It was essential to conduct this research because institutions will establish appropriate policies and understand how effective employees can be managed on the basis of enhancing their productivity. Motivation is one of the factors that determines if employee productivity is controlled by several influencing factors, such as stress, dissatisfaction, conflict, and anger. The theoretical framework, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, provides an insufficient understanding of wage compensation and motivation. Abraham Maslow arranged human needs in a hierarchal pattern ranging from the most concrete to the abstract needs and often presented as a pyramid with five levels that are in hierarchical order. The framework aims at understanding the effect of organizational environment and needs for employee motivations. This research filled the gap between previous studies and was based on a unique work environment in higher education. This study used the qualitative research method of data collection and primary sources for data analysis. The primary method used to analyze data was virtual interviews. To some extent, the interview process that permits respondents to answer based on their knowledge allows the researcher to get views from different perspectives. This study aimed to solve the problem of the relationship between low wages and motivation for employees. This research pushed deeper in establishing factors of influence regarding employee motivation in higher education. The findings of this research will add insights and considerations to the needed changes in the remuneration policies and programs that influence employee motivation and performance in academic settings. The research reviewed past data on low wage as a compensation factor for employee motivation and analyzed the same data to make insights out of it. The implications of the results of the analysis were then presented, and an understanding was inferred from the results and recommendations.
