AbstractThis basic quantitative comparative descriptive study investigated the difference in reading comprehension growth between elementary and high school students who received the reading intervention Read 180 and the difference in growth rates based on the completion of Read 180 segments. Studies have indicated that growth levels for younger students far outweigh the potential older students have, leading to high schools choosing not to offer reading intervention to students who have reached secondary school. Students who do not read at grade level struggle in all classes, and the gap between students who read at grade level and those who do not widen as they progress through school. The research questions were as follows: "Does a difference in Lexile growth exist between elementary and secondary students who complete one school year of Read 180 intervention?" and "Does a difference in Lexile growth exist for students who complete more than 10 segments during a school year within the Read 180 program and those who do not?" In this nonexperimental study, the researcher analyzed beginning-of-year and end-of-year data to determine the growth rates of students and make a comparison between elementary and secondary students who received the Read 180 intervention. The completion of Read 180 segments was also examined to determine different growth rates based on the number of segments a student completes as it related to their growth. Sampling strategies utilized probability and convenience techniques to include all students who participate in pre- and post-test assessments. The sample included 136 elementary students and 136 secondary students out of a population of 1,100. Conclusions of the study provided a practical significance for the implementation of the intervention program Read 180; findings of the study can be utilized to inform schools on diagnosing and intervening on students who read below grade level.
