AbstractSubstantial teacher turnover has been on a steady incline for over a decade. Studies show that 44% of teachers quit the profession within 5 years of teaching. Most of this loss is taking place in urban districts, where teacher attrition can have the greatest impact on school districts' outcomes. This costly issue is a significant factor disrupting learning during the school year and can cause long-term effects on student performance. The root of this trend can be due to several controlling factors such as poor working conditions, inadequate teacher preparation, unsupportive administration, low compensation, managing egregious student behavior, and the taxing demands of paperwork and detailed weekly lesson plans. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the cause of teacher attrition and its effects on an urban school district in New Jersey.
