AbstractWith the innovation of the internet, the learner is able to access his or her online classroom anytime, and anywhere based on the customized online learning environment by instructional designers. Creating online learning environments, also known as instructional design, can be challenging. This research focused on how instructional designers decide whether to use Agile or ADDIE model for creating online learning environments. The problem addressed by this study is to understand how instructional designers decided whether to use either the ADDIE model or the Agile Scrum Cycle model when creating online learning environments. The purpose of this case study was to gain a deeper understand of the usage of both Agile and ADDIE models when designing online learning environments. This study focused on the preference of whether the speed and flexibility of the Agile Scrum Cycle model process is more important in the learning process than the step-by-step ADDIE model process that takes more time when creating online learning environments. This case study included a purposeful sample of ten experienced designers selected from three institutions and administrative entities by way of purposive and snowball sampling. Data collection consisted of individual interviews and focus group sessions that were either face-to-face or recorded using zoom communications. The findings revealed that with either model creativity is an essential component when designing an online learning environment, the flexibility when designing using Agile allows reflection and make adjustments while designing, and the use of technology can help with the implementation of the learning environments designed. Recommendations for future research include finding other foundational models that could aid in designing online learning environments for instructional designers.
