Abstract | The purpose of this research was to enhance current understanding of world-minded attitudes among American college students. To be world-minded is to favor a worldview of global problems from the perspective of humanity rather than nationalism. Recent studies into world-mindedness commonly investigated study abroad experiences and multinational samples, despite the cultural diversity of globalized societies. To fill a gap and add to existing knowledge, this study focused on the world-minded attitudes of a diverse group of American students enrolled in internationally themed programs in the United States. A two-way ANOVA was used to examine significant differences in world-mindedness scores from a sample of 224 American male and female fourth-year undergraduate students enrolled in domestic international relations and international business programs. Equal representation between male and female participants was achieved to objectively assess the data resulting from an online survey-hosting platform where the instrument for this study, Der-Karabetian's 1992 Cross-Cultural World-Mindedness Scale, was posted. Significant differences were not produced from an interaction between the effects of program and gender, F(1,222) = 1.83, p = 0.217. However, the analysis revealed significantly higher world-mindedness scores among female students F(1,222) = 1.83, p = 0.001, a trend also found in previous research. Other experience-based qualities associated with gender may have influenced differences in world-minded attitudes.
