AbstractThe decision to close schools, reorganize, or consolidate districts is perhaps the most troubling and painful challenge a community can face (Flowers, 2010). The purpose of this study was to explore and provide a better understanding of the school district whole-grade sharing, reorganization, and/or consolidation phenomenon as seen through the eyes of school administrators and teachers who have lived the experience. The study was conducted using a qualitative, phenomenological in-depth interview methodology. A research sample consisting of five school administrators and five teachers who had individually experienced school reorganization in the state of Iowa was utilized. Data was collected from audiotaped face-to-face and/or telephone derived semi-structured interviews and field notes. The audio tapes were then transcribed and data from the transcriptions were coded utilizing a descriptive process and analyzed according to the research questions. Experiences associated with the participants served as a framework for discussion about the phenomenon, and the perceived effects. The research, discussion, and data analysis resulted in five principal themes emerging from the experiences. The major themes were as follows: inevitability, resistance, unknowns, challenges, and change. In general, the research revealed school whole-grade sharing, reorganization, and consolidation produce countless feelings, opinions, and reactions, both positive and negative, from the school administrators and teachers directly impacted by the phenomena. The study's findings align with, and expand, the previous research and knowledge pertaining to the potential issues stakeholders who are subjected to the phenomenon of whole-grade sharing, reorganization, and/or consolidation may endure, the common responses they may exhibit, and perceptions held having lived through the experience.
