AbstractMore adult special needs learners are enrolling in degree programs. The problem to be addressed is to what degree the individual needs of special needs students are being addressed. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was to explore the current and degree of readiness of institutes of higher learning to meet the special needs of adult special needs learners who enroll in degree programs, from the perspective of adult special needs learners in the United States. It is the primary purpose of this study to help create a better quality of life for special needs and adult learners. It is the aim of this study to endeavor to ensure a quality-filled, successful and satisfying education experience for all. A constructivist approach is best for achieving the goal of creating change for the better. A survey questionnaire was compiled by the researcher with the target population being adult special needs learners who were enrolled in degree programs. Data were collected anonymously via the Northcentral University Qualtrics website. A student questionnaire was arranged in a series of themes relevant to the adult disabled learner's experiences and were used to identify themes and areas for concern. Data were analyzed by the primary researcher and included content analysis. These study results are taken from individual special needs learners' own responses to questions and information was collected anonymously. These accounts may be considered as expert opinions and serve as an impetus toward making the effort to meet learners' needs. Results indicate a need for change, including peer and staff education and awareness of issues, physical changes, the addition of assistive devices and tools, and further improvements in Student Services. The next step in furthering this research is to involve a larger number of study participants, to potentially gain a fuller understanding of the situation. Input from administrators, faculty, staff, and peers may be a necessary step in promoting a better quality of education and life for all learners.
