Abstract | A review of the literature illustrates the high prevalence rate and negative student outcomes associated with verbal aggression (VA) in school settings. Research in the U.S. reveals the correlates and effects of VA that can inform and facilitate a research agenda for interventionists focused on violence prevention in school settings. Our analysis and synthesis of VA literature from 2005 identifies the frequency of VA in school settings and the demographics of those who engage in, and experience VA. Our conceptual framework informed by the literature includes the intrapersonal effects of VA, impact of VA on academic achievement, and the correlation of VA to physical aggression. We also explore the availability of interventions designed to prevent, control, and/or eliminate VA. (As Provided). |
