Abstract | The purpose of this action research was to investigate social and emotional learning kernels/strategies that can be implemented by teachers at a U.S. elementary school to support students' social and emotional skills (SES) development. The implementation of school-wide social and emotional programs have demonstrated positive benefits for students. This project investigated how teachers and social workers can support students' social and emotional development. Participants were certified teachers and social workers with different levels of experience. The data collected for this study were obtained through interviews, focus groups, and a field journal. The results of this study indicated that participants felt strongly that SES are essential for children to do well in school both academically and socially. The study also identified a number of evidence-based strategies to be recommended for school-wide implementation. The conclusions drawn from this study can be used to provide school districts with guidelines on how teachers and school social workers can work collaboratively to address the social and emotional needs of students.
