Abstract | The big-picture vision of the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) says it is important to foster students' dispositions to learn and to contribute as active members of society. The key competencies directly support this vision. NZC describes them as "capabilities for living and lifelong learning." Key competencies direct attention to students' ability to do something with the concepts they learn (from across all the learning areas). They help teachers think about purposes for learning--what it is important the students are able to do as a result of their learning. This paper looks at what happens when teachers design rich tasks to draw on all aspects of the key competencies. [A version of this paper was presented at the third European Conference of Curriculum Studies in Stirling, Scotland in June 2017.] (ERIC). |
