Abstract | This quantitative study explored the formation of different types of social capital among community college students. Utilizing the second-order confirmatory factor analysis, the authors argued that both family and college social capital constructs should be measured for community college students. A structural equation modeling analysis further indicated that college social capital had stronger effects on degree aspiration compared to family social capital. Family social capital impacted degree aspiration indirectly through the mediation of college social capital. Findings contributed to the literature by emphasizing the important role of institutional agents in promoting educational aspiration among underrepresented and underprepared students.
