Abstract | This qualitative research report is a historical, instrumental, single, bounded case study, based on the concept of charisma, and charismatic leadership and authority in operation. It is based on Max Weber's ideal-type charismatic leadership model. The researcher examined the sociocultural climate of the 1960s and 1970s to find out how charismatic leaders emerge, how charisma becomes operational, and its impact on affected populations. The exemplar featured in the study was Victor Paul Wierwille and The Way International. Themes that surfaced from the findings in the study included ideological and moral identity development, followership, the perception and practice of solidarity between leaders and followers, and the routinization of learning activities from the organic stage to institutionalization. A dramaturgical analysis that included framing, scripting, staging, and performing was used to examine how charisma is operationalized. The results and implications of the study are applicable to the practice in adult learning, community organizing, and leadership.
