AbstractLittle to no professional research exists regarding the challenges that juvenile justice school administrators encounter in leading their respective schools. This study sought to identify the challenges juvenile justice school administrators experience and whether they are similar to those experienced by their K-12 counterparts. This study surveyed juvenile justice school administrators across 10 states (West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Delaware, Washington, Oregon, and Kentucky) to address the following research questions: A) What do principals at juvenile justice administered schools identify as challenges in leading their schools? B) How do the challenges to leadership, as indicated by principals at juvenile justice administered schools, differ from what the literature indicates are those faced by public school principals? The study determined that juvenile justice school administrators identify nine specific challenges as major challenges to completing their jobs. The nine identified challenges included: A) managing societal issues, B) combating poverty, C) maintaining academic rigor, D) addressing student individual needs, E) student home issues, F) data-driven decision-making, G) hiring/mentoring/retaining high-quality teachers, and H) personnel issues. Addressing individual student needs, maintaining academic rigor, and managing societal issues were the most identified challenges of the nine. The study found that these nine challenges were significantly similar to those found in the professional literature regarding K-12 school administrators. The remaining 18 challenges identified had a weaker correlation with the professional literature. Findings form the study found that approximately 69% of juvenile justice school administrators had less than 10 years of experience in their position. More than 60% of the surveyed school administrators indicated an average student length of stay of 60 days or less, leading to a high volume of student turnover.
