Abstract | Current research and policy statements regarding mathematics teacher preparation support shifting the focus of content courses for prospective elementary teachers (PTs) towards the mathematics that elementary teachers are expected to teach, or "content knowledge for teaching mathematics" (CKTM). This paper describes a research-based elementary mathematics curriculum for PTs designed to support instructors in implementing the content and pedagogical recommendations to develop PTs' CKTM. The curriculum consisted of three independent units: Fractions, Geometric Measurement, and Number Theory. Each unit was field-tested by 20 to 26 instructors across the country for a total of approximately 500 PTs providing data for each unit. The results indicate that the curricular materials for each unit were significantly and largely effective in increasing PTs CKTM. (As Provided). |
