Abstract | In this mixed methods study we examined students' science engagement in relation to classroom opportunities to participate in science practices in a sample of middle school (N = 1613) students from 28 socioeconomically diverse schools in the western region of the United States. Students from high socioeconomic status (SES) schools reported significantly greater science engagement (across behavioral, affective, and cognitive dimensions) and more opportunities to participate in science practices compared to students from lower SES schools. Results also showed that school SES predicted opportunities to participate in science, and these opportunities in turn, predicted science engagement. Qualitative findings of student interviews revealed how dimensions of science engagement interacted with dimensions of science practices, aspects of the classroom environment, and school SES.
