AbstractThis qualitative study sought to understand how enrolling and graduating in a secular and nonsectarian postsecondary institution in the United States affected the beliefs, personalities, social and intercultural competencies, and careers of a group of male Orthodox Jewish students from the Yeshiva program at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU). The researcher interviewed eight alumni of the Yeshiva program (undergraduate level) individually. Jean Piaget's Assimilation Theory, Abraham Maslow's Motivation Theory, and Horace Kallen's Multiculturalism Theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. The findings revealed that transitioning from the Orthodox Jewish religious educational setting to a liberal arts education institution matured the participants in their personal lives as they gained confidence as individuals and gained a broader view of the gentile society and its challenges. Additionally, the student's participants expressed that their academic experience at FDU helped them to appreciate the differences existing in our society and to value the principle of equality before God's eyes. After exposure to certain courses taught at the Yeshiva program, it provided them an eye-opening and invaluable experience. Moreover, most participants appreciated the benefits obtained from their academic experience at FDU not only in their personal but also in their professional and academic endeavors after their graduation from the Yeshiva program at FDU.
