AbstractCampus public safety has become a major concern over the last decade for the entire college community. As incidents of mass violence on college campuses increase, many college administrators are searching for the most effective measures to prevent such incidents from happening on their campuses. One method gaining popularity is the establishment of threat assessment teams on college campuses. Community colleges, which typically have fewer budgetary and personnel resources than their four-year counterparts, are also attempting to protect their staff and students from these incidents of mass violence. However, community colleges often have to do so with limited personnel and must be creative when thinking of the best methods of threat assessment for their institution. For this study, the researchers set out to determine if establishing a threat assessment team is a feasible course of action for the site of this research, a north Mississippi community college commuter campus. The researchers began this action based research by sending a questionnaire regarding threat assessment to all full-time employees. The results of the questionnaire were utilized to conduct a focus group with five key stakeholders on the campus. Some common themes, such as safety and training, emerged as a result of the focus group. Although there were some interesting findings from the focus group session, the inequities in resources at community colleges did not turn out to be as big of a hindrance as the researchers expected. However, the researchers were able to determine that the creation of a threat assessment team utilizing current employees was likely a good option for this institution to take.
