AbstractStudents enrolled at Secaro University who have been hospitalized for mental health reasons are mandated by the University to attend counseling to remain enrolled. This mandate also requires these students to meet with staff from the Dean of Students Office or another member of the Behavioral Intervention Team for case management; these meetings are aimed at ensuring compliance with mandated counseling, connection to available resources, and general check-in. The research question for this dissertation is, "How do case management practices at this University impact students?" More specifically, "How does the location of counseling services post hospitalization affect student persistence and academic standing? Does the location of such services affect persistence and academic standing differently for students who were voluntarily hospitalized versus those students who were involuntarily hospitalized?" Located in a rural area, access to mental health services for students without health care benefits and/or transportation is not readily available or easily accessible. In this case study I reviewed records of two academic years of student hospitalizations to explore the impacts of the case management of those students on their academic standing and persistence based on the type of hospitalization and student's choice of care provider. Utilizing non-parametric tests, specifically Mann Whitney U, this study suggests that students with off-campus care providers persist at lower rates than students with on-campus care providers. This study also shows students who are involuntarily hospitalized with an off-campus care provider may struggle academically. With these data Behavioral Intervention Team members providing case management can provide additional focused support to foster success and retention.
