AbstractThe purpose of this program evaluation was to evaluate the effectiveness of a personalized learning environment while analyzing the cultural changes a small school district faced as it transitioned to a new delivery model using individual technological devices. Findings for the study will be used to guide 1:1 Chromebook implementation initiatives at other school sites across the district. A qualitative research design, through the form of a program evaluation, was used in order to gain a deeper understanding on the implementation process experienced by the various stakeholders involved in this personalized learning initiative. Data was gathered through a questionnaire, face-to-face semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Participant responses during the interview process clearly could be categorized into one of five identified themes. The themes that emerged included: (a) challenges and benefits of the program, (b) the device's influence on instruction, (c) professional development, (d) advice to colleagues, and (e) the overarching impact on school culture. These five categories developed as I coded each response using the NVivo software program and applying at a varying level to each of the three research questions that initiated this program evaluation. Classroom observations closely mirrored the information provided from staff members through the semi-structured interviews. Staff members involved in this program evaluation provided me with a great deal of feedback on how to improve future 1:1 Chromebook implementation initiative 1:1 Chromebook implementation initiatives at other schools in the Nuview Union School District. Participants made it known to me that it is important (a) to focus on formalized professional development, (b) to collaborate with "in-house" experts, and (c) to consistently utilize Google Classroom across each grade level and department at the school site. Involving teachers on all levels of implementation is of upmost importance. Recommendations for future research: Future research could inspect how school districts maintain personalized learning environments over an extended period of time while assessing long-term student achievement. While this program evaluation was qualitative in format, future quantitative research could be conducted on the academic growth in students enrolled in schools that focus entirely on personalized learning as the primary mode of delivering instruction, which could also compare the findings to student achievement in school settings that are more traditional in nature.
