Abstract	K-12 education in the United States and across the world is at a turning point. The steady march towards equality and justice within the country has changed the context for the education system. At the same time, rapid and unpredictable changes in society and culture have created new expectations for education, changing what is needed for education systems to provide for students and society. The traditional system of public education was not designed with this context or these expectations in mind. The promise of, and demand for competency-based education has never been greater. This paper and the ideas within it offer a resource for the field at a critical time in its evolution. The number of schools and districts implementing competency-based models has steadily increased over the past few years. There are many reasons why districts turn to competency education, including lifting the ceiling on learning so that students can excel beyond their grade levels; ensuring students are building higher order skills; seeking to offer students a richer education beyond preparation for college and careers; opening up more opportunities for students to learn any place, any time; and, responding to demographic changes. This publication seeks to advance K-12 competency education along four key issues: quality, equity, meeting students where they are, and policy. K-12 education in the United States and across the world is at a critical point in its evolution, and the demand for competency education has never been greater. The four key issues outlined in this report are critical to enabling competency-based education to scale with quality and sustainability over the long term. The report provides actionable recommendations on how the field can advance through the next wave of innovation and implementation.
