AbstractEquality and equity are often mischaracterized as interchangeable terms in public education. This may explain why efforts towards reform and restructure are often not met with any real measure of success. "Equity, Equality, and Reform in Contemporary Public Education" provides emerging research on the reformation of education curriculum to provide proportionate opportunities for marginalized students and support for student achievement in public education. While highlighting topics, such as achievement gaps, gender biases, and multicultural responsiveness, this book explores the theories and applications of different measures of reform to promote fairness among individual students. This book is an important resource for educators, professionals, school administrators, researchers, and practitioners in the field of education. This book contains the following chapters: (1) Equity, Equality, and Reform in Contemporary Public Education: Equity, Equality, and Reform (Marquis Carter Grant); (2) Revolutionizing Education (Nadira Jack); (3) All My Life I Had to Fight: The Disproportionate Impact of School Disciplinary Policies on Black Girls in K-12 Contexts (Terry Husband and Chequita Brown); (4) Viewing the Contamination of Student Achievement Through the Lens of Poverty (Cheryl Ann Slattery); (5) "So, Are You Hindi?": Religion and Education in U.S. South Asian Narratives (M. Gail Hickey); (6) Girls in STEM K-12 Subjects: Exploring the Confidence and Hindrance of Pursuing STEM Careers (Courtney Glavich Mayakis and Jessica Robinson); (7) Educational Disparities Among Marginalized Groups of Students: Do Bully Victimization and Unsafe Schools Impede Students' Educational Attainment? (Monica Bixby Radu); (8) Pedagogical Interventions in the First-Year Writing Classroom for First-Generation College Students (Jessica Rae Jorgenson Borchert); (9) Sowing Seeds of Justice: Feminists' Reflections on Teaching for Social Justice in the Southwest (Tonya Evette Walls, Malayka Neith Cornejo, Tara J. Plachowski, Erica Kristina Reid, and Soo Park); (10) Using Culturally Responsive Teaching and Data-Driven Instruction in Mathematics to Create Equity and Equality: Culturally Responsive Mathematics (Pamela D. Porter); and (11) Education as the Practice of Freedom: Writing Truth Into the Curriculum Across the Globe (Marva S. McClean and Marcus Woolombi Waters). (Individual chapters contain references.)
