AbstractThe purpose of this mixed methods research study was to explore the perceptions of the participants regarding their experiences in the online and face-to-face delivery modes of instruction, the perceptions of the participants regarding their experiences using discussion forums, and whether the online and face-to-face delivery modes of instruction impact the participants' achievement of domain knowledge in a high school English class. Participants were students in English classes in a suburban public high school. The data included focus group interviews, an online survey with Likert-type and open-ended questions, pretest and posttest reading assessment data, and Individual Reading Skill Assessment data. The results support research that shows a connection between positive student perceptions and student achievement. The results of this study also support research that shows that the use of technology can produce "gains in student achievement that are inconsistent and sometimes contradictory" (The Abell Foundation, 2008, p. 17). Participants perceived discussion forums more favorably than the online delivery mode of instruction, but, overall perceived discussion forums and the online delivery mode of instruction as more neutral than positive. Results showed that participants viewed discussion forums as an effective communication tool, but not always assistive to their learning. The results of this study support the use of the blended learning model, a "pedagogical approach that combines the effectiveness and socialization opportunities of the classroom with the technologically enhanced active learning possibilities of online learning" (Dzubian, Hartman, & Moskal, 2004, p. 3).
