Abstract | This annual report examines information on school construction completed and underway during 2014 and planned to start in 2015. Among the findings of this report: (1) school districts in the United States spent more than $14 billion ($14,123,865,000) on construction projects completed during the 2014 calendar year; (2) most of the construction involves the design and building of new schools, but 45 percent of the dollars spent on work completed in 2014 was used to enlarge and upgrade existing buildings; (3) school districts in six of the 12 regions spent more than $1 billion on school construction. Spending in three other regions breeched $900 million, and two others put more than $880 million in place. Only in Region 7 (Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin), did last year's construction total less than $800 million, and school districts in those three states reported that they spent more in 2014 than in the previous year.
