AbstractThis case study examined how a short-term study abroad program affected a cohort of career and technical education (CTE) students at a rural community college. Qualitative research methods were used for this study, including interviews and document analysis, to understand students' perceptions of their experiences studying and serving others in Guatemala for 10 days. The following questions guided the research: How do community college students in the Ophthalmic Technology Program describe their experiences in short-term study abroad? To what degree and in what ways are former study abroad students globally and civically engaged in the years following their study abroad experiences? To investigate these questions, a constant comparative method was used as data were systematically, simultaneously collected, and analyzed. Eight key themes emerged from this analysis. For Research Question 1, how do community college students in the ophthalmic technology program describe their experiences in short-term study abroad, four themes surfaced. The first theme was how the students learned career skills and ophthalmic skills from professors in a manner different from what transpires in a traditional classroom and lab. A second theme that emerged was compassion, and with this theme a subtheme developed that demonstrated that the students had a broader view of healthcare since participating in study abroad. The participants also consistently mentioned how this study abroad opportunity helped them learn and develop new career skills. Learning and honing new career skills was the third theme for Research Question 1. Language was the fourth theme, which developed for Research Question 1 and addressed personal experiences with cultural differences. None of the participants spoke a second language. For Research Question 2, to what degree and in what ways are former study abroad students globally and civically engaged in the years following their study abroad experiences, three themes evolved. The first theme that arose was whether participants had done additional international travel for either work, vacation, or civic reasons. Following this, the second theme was unpacked, and the students' use of their international experience in their workplace was examined. The final theme that developed was how each of the study participants overestimated their initial ease of being with and working with people from other cultures. This study's findings illustrate the transformative potential of short-term study abroad programs for community college students.
