Abstract | The purpose of this study was to fill the gaps in literature on the resilience levels of student-veterans and adult learners in community colleges. The research problem addressed the resilience of student-veterans compared to other college students. In this study, student veterans from a community college in New Jersey completed the CD-RISC 25 Resilience Scale assessment. There CD-RISC 25 results were then compared with other student and military populations. There is a common misperception that most student-veterans suffer from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Thankfully that is not the case for all veterans. Those assumptions made about veterans by administrators, professors, and fellow college classmates take away from the overall academic experience for student-veterans. Although some student-veterans are dealing with PTSD and TBI, most student-veterans need general guidance, transition skills, and academic counseling. The transition from active duty military service back to civilian life is challenging. Then transitioning from civilian life to the life of a college student brings on potentially even more challenging issues and concerns for student-veterans. Going to college as a newly discharged veteran or a veteran returning to college after an extended period is also a transition that the student-veterans must deal with as well.
