AbstractThere have been several studies regarding the factors as to why students drop out of high school in both urban and rural areas. However, there have been few studies, which have examined why female students in rural areas have left high school before graduating. From 2010-2014, there had been a 29% increase in the dropout rate among female students. In West Virginia alone, there has been an increase in female students dropping out of school from 2010-2014; the data showed that out of the 55 counties there were 18 counties where more female students drop out of school. In order to understand this phenomenon, the researcher collaborated with a rural area school system where the number of female students who have dropped out is continually higher than male students. Through a qualitative case study, the researcher conducted interviews with female students who had dropped out of school and were at risk to drop out of school. The researcher gathered information regarding the reasons as to why they left school or are planning to leave through interview questions. The twelve female participants chosen for this study was made up from two groups; those who had already dropped out and those who are at risk and have indicated that they will drop out. This research study was conducted to determine the cause of the increasing dropout percentages. The data from this study could be significant in determining an alternate course for female students.
