AbstractThe college experience often includes activities outside the classroom that involve engaging with other students in a shared interest. These experiences often transform into alumni engaging in alumni functions, or participating through other means of identifying with the college, including wearing college logos. Online alumni involvement, specifically concerning donations, decreased with the number of completed courses online, perhaps indicating less engagement or minimal satisfaction. The specific problem was to identify origins for relationships between educational institutions and online alumni, specifically those alumni completing entire degree programs online. Alumni may develop feelings of loyalty or obligation to the educational institution based upon educational experiences, including active involvement with student organizations, but these options may be limited in the online campus depending upon the offerings available. Knowledge from this study added to the knowledge base for online alumni relationship development, factoring in the same concerns often identified with the online learner, including communication, time, technology, branding, loyalty, and interactions. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate existing relationships between online alumni and the educational institution in order to identify origins for relationship development. Online alumni received a request for participation via e-mail. This qualitative study, through using the lens of involvement theory and socialization theory, incorporated interviews with eight online alumni with documented involvement in the recognized alumni association to explore the emotional or psychological motivations for continuing relationships with the alma mater. The eight interviewees, online graduates from a small community college, self-selected participation in the study.
