Abstract | This study aimed to add to the information known about the leaders charged with the task of successfully and sustainably turning around a school. Specifically, this research examined the extent to which leaders engaged in turnaround school reform experienced mindfulness. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, state assigned school grades of schools involved in formal reform efforts were examined among elementary and middle schools in a school district located in a Southwest border region. Principals of 10 schools involved in formal school reform were given the Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) to self-report their level of mindfulness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the four most mindful participants as determined by their FFMQ score, to understand each leader experienced mindfulness. Common themes were developed from the data set to describe mindfulness in school reform. The results of this research indicated, that the most mindful school leaders were aware, focused, communicative, and prepared. These major themes directly linked to Sustainable Leadership Theory. This finding coupled with the state assigned school grades suggested that mindful school leaders selected elements of reform that led to positive sustainable outcomes for their students. From these findings, practical recommendations were made for working with school level leaders engaged in school reform. Additionally, the implications for school reform in a culturally diverse setting are explored with an emphasis on mindfulness as a potential for ensuring that socially just practices are implemented. Suggestions for how to expand upon the findings of this research are also included. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
