AbstractThis qualitative, descriptive single-case study explored the transition from a hierarchical to a hierarchical-collaborative relationship between special education teachers (SET) and special education paraeducators (SEP). Sixteen participants, including eight veteran SET and eight SEP working in one county located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, took part in this study aiming to establish how SET and SEP perceived the transition from a hierarchical to a hierarchical-collaborative SET-SEP relationship. The revised path-goal theory of effective leadership by House and the collaborative leadership theory developed by Chrislip and Larson comprised the conceptual framework for this study. Three sources of data were used, namely semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and a researcher's journal. The six steps of thematic analysis were implemented to analyze the data. The results yielded by this study revealed that the transition from a hierarchical to a hierarchical-collaborative SET-SEP relationship is dependent upon the individuals and whom they are paired with as opposed to matters of time. The themes that emerged from this study included: (a) Who and Where, Not When, (b) Barriers to the Transition, (c) Setting the Stage, (d) Facilitating the Transition, and (e) Changes over Time. The themes comprise a cyclical pattern that SET and SEP work through to establish a hierarchical-collaborative SET-SEP relationship.
